In one of the most significant moments of my artistic career, my poetry was included in an incredibly moving exhibit by artist Stanley Wany, called For Those Who Chose the Sea. The exhibit, which includes an excerpt of my poem, In Memory of Those Who Chose the Sea, debuted at the Ottawa Art Gallery in Ottawa, Ontario Canada and is now making its way through a few other parts of Canada. Check out this most recent display of the exhibit in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada at The Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art.

In the News.

In February 2020, I performed in and assistant directed a staged reading at TCU of the original play For Bo, written by Ayvaunn Penn. This reading was covered extensively by local news outlets and one such news story is featured here. For Bo was performed as a virtual and visual art experience for its world premiere production in April 2021, directed in part by yours truly.

Theatre TCU Black Excellence.

A saving grace for my college experience, Theatre TCU Black Excellence is an organization that creates a safe space for Black theatre artists at TCU to express themselves in the most authentic and unapologetic way. I am honored to be a founding member of the organization. Click the button below to watch our inaugural cabaret, “BLACKOUT,” which features a reading of my poem In Memory of Those Who Chose the Sea.

The Haunted Oak

By Paul Laurence Dunbar

Directing Projects 2020

I had the incredible honor of directing The Haunted Oak, a poem by Paul Laurence Dunbar, for my directing class in my Fall 2020 semester. We had the unique opportunity to choose, direct, and create a story that was close to our hearts as directors. I chose a story that strikes the balance between who I am as a writer and a theatre artist, and one that draws clear parallels between struggles of the past and the present. I also wanted to cloak Black bodies in light and beauty, while still allowing space for us to feel the heaviness and the hardship that inevitably comes with being Black in America throughout history. Directing this project was one of a few major bright spots in my 2020.

Escape the Simulation

A.D.A.P.T.S 2020

In an effort to adapt to the craziness that has hit the theatre world in the year 2020, Theatre TCU took on the A.D.A.P.T.S Projects. Thirty-two cohorts created original content and 12 of those cohorts (lovingly known as “The Dirty Dozen”) had their projects featured as Theatre TCU’s final show of the Fall ‘20 season. My cohort was one of the lucky 12, featuring a script written by me. Check it out!
